About Me / Teaching Philosophy

Kathleen has sung baroque masterpieces in Cathedrals, and rollicking Australian ballads on rivers in Tasmania. She has recorded for the ABC, commercial radio and television and toured throughout Australia and abroad. She has performed for Opera Australia, Sydney Symphony, at the Myer Music Bowl (Melbourne), and in many festivals, concerts and recitals, with many talented musicians and outstanding international artists.

Kathleen is the recipient of post-graduate qualifications in vocal pedagogy, which well equips her to teach an integrated method of vocal technique that includes:

Respiratory (the breathing muscles), Phonation (the sound producing muscles), Resonation (the sound quality muscles) Articulation (the sound shaping muscles), Register Transitions and Range Extension.

With the use of exercises such as scales, arpeggios, triads, and songlets and rhythmic drills, Kathleen will help refine a singer's pitch and rhythmic practice, which in turn will develop their repertoire, assisting them to choose songs that suit their voice, personality and ability.

Also, Kathleen will assist in enhancing a singer's performance skills, such as practice methods, stage presence, exam and audition skills, and actor/singer development.

Her dynamic and personalised approach encourages students to discover their own tools for learning. Students are assisted to modify unhelpful technical and behavioural traits and begin to strengthen and coordinate their singing voice.

She holds leadership roles for Australian National Association of Teachers of Singing, and gives lectures and master classes, and has published articles on vocal and performance skills.

Kathleen teaches in secondary, tertiary and performing arts schools and at her private studio which includes a diverse range of students from classical singers to pop vocalists, music theatre performers, recreational, adolescent and child singers.

Past and present students have achieved outstanding exam and competition results, and include university graduates, actors, college candidates, recording artists and performers in professional and community theatre.
